RABBI SOL SOLOMON’S RABBINICAL REFLECTION #207 (5/16/2026): Abraham Foxman

(c)2026 David Lefkowitz. aired May 16, 2026 on Dave’s Gone By.

Shalom, Dammit! This is Rabbi Sol Solomon, with a Rabbinical Reflection for mid-May 2026.

Baruch Dayan HaEmet Avraham Chanoch Hanach Fuksman, which is a lot of names to say goodbye to Abraham Foxman, for 30 years the indefatigable head of the Anti-Defamation League, the ADL.

Now before the Israel-bashers chime in, please don’t confuse the ADL for AIPAC. AIPAC lobbies for money from American politicians to keep Israel safe, secure, and on the map. The ADL calls out the kind of idiots who bitch about AIPAC. The ADL is there to monitor anti-Semitism and torchlight it before it becomes Germany 1933.

Founded in 1913, the ADL is an off-shoot of the B’nai Brith – and if you’ve ever had a brith, you know how painful that can be. Thank God for the B’nai Brith because it’s an organization devoted to protecting Jews and the Jewish homeland, Israel. The Anti-Defamation League is exactly what its name promises: taking people to task when they do or say racist things affecting the Jewish people.

That was Abraham Foxman’s job for 30 years. Trained in the law, Foxy would hear some terrible comment by a politician, or a great actor, or Mel Gibson, and he’d be there to say “watch your fucking mouth.” (Maybe not in those words.) With his gift of persuasion, Foxman would guilt the guilty party into apologizing and admitting the error of their ways, or at least pretending to, for the sake of public relations.

More than just catching and punishing people, Foxman truly wanted our enemies to realize the harm they were doing and make them see our side of story. We find a great example of this in a column earlier this year in the Jewish Daily Forward. It covers Foxman’s prickly friendship with another recent dead guy, Jesse Jackson. When he ran for president, Jackson might’ve garnered sizable Jewish support: he was a liberal, a friend of MLK, a voice for the underclass. But Jesse got frustrated by the bureaucracy of New York politics and was heard calling the Big Apple “Hymietown” – which is a nicer way of saying “Kiketown.” Just the way “schvartzetown” is a nicer way of saying . . . Well, anyway, the media picked up Jackson’s racial slur, not to mention his buddy-buddyship with Louis Farrakhan, and now not only wouldn’t Jews vote Jackson for president, they wouldn’t even trust him as a Shabbos goy.

So, Abraham Foxman let Jackson have it – which started a dialogue, which led to years of a grudging mutual respect and Jackson paying attention to and often supporting the Jewish community. Was he perfect? No. Are you perfect? No. Am I perfect? (pause) Was Abraham Foxman perfect? Of course not. It’s easy to overreact when someone in a pissy mood blurts a slur. However, hate speech is a slippery slope, and more power to the ADL for throwing down a little gravel to impede the slide.

How sad it is that Foxman died at a time when we need him most: when social media has brainwashed a generation of college students to despise Israel, when every musical micro-talent spouts Hamas talking points better than their own shitty navel-gazing lyrics, when the New York Times – always suspect when it came to Eretz Yisroel – falls all over itself printing false narratives for liberals to immerse themselves in a Gaza pity party.

Jonathan Greenblatt is the new CEO of the ADL (actually, not so new; he’s been running it since Foxman retired a decade ago), and I commend him for filling his predecessor’s big shoes in a quieter way. But silence isn’t always golden, and while Abe Foxman helped bring the right wing under Israel’s chuppah, the progressive left has left the altar and thrown itself into the arms of Hezbollah. I don’t think Foxman’s turning in his grave (because he’s a big guy and his stomach would get blocked by the coffin lid), but I’m sure he’d have much to say about the state of the world and the state of Israel. If only we could still listen.

RABBI SOL SOLOMON’S RABBINICAL REFLECTION #200 (12/31/2025): 2025 Farewell

airs Dec. 31, 2025 on Dave’s Gone By. Watch here: TBA

Shalom Dammit! This is Rabbi Sol Solomon with a Rabbinical Reflection for the end of the year, 2025.

I don’t think I know anyone who hasn’t had a cruddy year. If they’re not upset with politics and the government, they’re dealing with death, illness, financial stress, mental problems, dental problems — if you actually had a good year in 2025, please let me know your phone number so I can play it for Lotto.

But here it is, December 31st, and whaddya know? You survived. I’m not saying you thrived, but you endured. And I hope you got your jollies along the way. Not every news event was tragic, and a few sad stories had silver linings. Pope Francis died, but the new guy’s from Chicago. He’s on the conservative side, but what do you expect from a Pope, Ru Paul? And while inflation is scaring everyone who has to buy a house, a car, a health plan, or, you know, groceries, the stock market has remained a juggernaut. Therefore, if, by the time you retire, you haven’t given all your money to Aetna, you might have a few bucks left in your 401K… to spend on cat food.

Politically it was another Civil War-level year, with liberals screaming “disaster!” at Trump’s every move, and Trump often deserving the screams. Did he need to renovate the White House Ballroom and make the silverware goldenware? Did he have to put his name on the memorial Kennedy Center — I mean, Trump’s bullet missed! And did the President have to redact all those pages in the Epstein files that showed him to be almost as big a perv as Bill Clinton? Well, at least Trump is ridding the country of useless foreigners with questionable visas. Anybody seen Melania lately?

Meanwhile, antisemitism, disguised as antizionism, still gives college students and left-wing wingnuts a hard-on, but Israel and the Palestinians are holding to some kind of cease fire, while America’s been going after ISIS in Syria and Nigeria and stopping nukes in Iran. And while the mass murder at a Chanukah festival in Bondi Beach reminded us Jews are still hated, a clump of Jewish corpses granted us a day or two of sympathy before the clown cars returned with their Free Gaza circus act. God help us, New York elected a rabidly anti-Israel socialist mayor, but the good news is: Mamdani’s policies will be so ruinous, bankrupting, and unenforceable, no one’s gonna give an alqaraf what he believes!

Oh, and if it’s not already evident, let me assert that this Rabbinical Reflection was written entirely with my two little hands and my too-preoccupied brain. That is to say, any intelligence you happen to find in my prose may be unexpected but not artificial. 2025 was the year that everything on social media or the internet was suspect. From heartwarming parables about celebrities to the sloppiest slop, algorithms were telling us what to buy, how to think, and where to vent. It was the year academics gave up fighting A.I. and instead told students, “Hey, my ChatGPT wrote this exam. Have your Grammarly take it, and then my Copilot will grade it. And afterwards we can all meet on the unemployment line because nobody has to fucking know anything anymore.”

But I digress. Anger is not the endgame of my annual review of the annum gone by. Nostalgic melancholy is more the mood because now is time to remember those we lost. Musicians, authors, performers — folks who left their mark, so in poetic form, we mark their passing.

Farewell to Pope Francis, as Popes go, a goodie

Adieu, Diane Keaton, we loved you with Woody

With his gifted family, Sly Stone took us higher

And tears for Jill Sobule, who died in a fire

We lost Lalo Schiffrin and his orchestrations

Let’s hope Brian Wilson picks up good vibrations

Ace Frehley and Ozzy now sleep in the sand

And farewell Garth Hudson, the last of The Band.

We lost Malcolm-Jamal Warner when he lost his grips

Loretta Swit and Chuck Mangione have sealed their hot lips

Farewell to Rob Reiner, what great films he did!

If only Nick Reiner was Greta Thunberg’s kid.

Tom Stoppard whose plays were quite The Real Thing

Now joins Robert Redford in feeling death’s Sting

Bye bye to Hulk Hogan who wrestled with glee

And Loni Anderson, who put the T&A in KRP

Ta-ta, Charlie Kirk, whose death gave us chills

So long to George Foreman whose life gave us grills

Bill Moyers once anchored the news desk with grace

And Charles Strouse helped us put on a happy face

With David Johansen we rocked and got funky

And Jane Goodall taught us the mind of a monkey

So long, David Lynch, whose films got tongues waggin’

“Puff” went Peter Yarrow, and his magic dragon

Connie Francis could sing and Roberta Flack croon

Jules Feiffer satirized life by cartoon

Gene Hackman found dead in his run-down chalet

Steve Cropper now dead on the dock of the bay

Val Kilmer, Diane Ladd, each one a sad loss

And Jimmy Cliff has no more rivers to cross

No love for Dick Cheney and his years of fears

But raise up a glass for George Wendt and his Cheers

And keep that toast going for loved ones departed

We mourn them, we miss them, and though brokenhearted

We bravely go forward through kicks, sticks, and bricks

And hope for the best in 2026.

RABBI SOL SOLOMON’S RABBINICAL REFLECTION #195 (6/25/2025): Zohran Mamdani

airs June 28, 2025 on Dave’s Gone By. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_8PqbgcvwE

Shalom Dammit! This is Rabbi Sol Solomon with a Rabbinical Reflection for late June 2025.

Well, congratulations, progressive Democrats. Your efforts to transform once-magnificent New York City into a terrifying shithole are going splendidly. On June 24th, Primary Day in NYC, voters rejected Andrew Cuomo—whose only sin was hubris and killing a bunch of old people during COVID (ask yourself: were they missed?). Instead, these lefty losers pulled the trigger – er, lever – for Zohran Mamdani.

Who is Zohran Mamdani? Or, more precisely, who the fuck is Zohran Mamdani? He’s the son of a Columbia Professor of Colonialism (that should tell you something right there) and of a filmmaker mom who’s spent a decade boycotting Israel. Little Zohran got his start stumping for a Palestinian pastor and joining the anti-Zionist Democratic Socialists of America. Bolstered by these unassailable credentials, in 2020 Mamdani was elected Assemblyman for Astoria and Long Island City, Queens.

Like so many liberal Democrats, Mamdani has ideas that sound good on paper: raising minimum wage, free busing, government-run free grocery stores for the poor (can you say, Russia 1970s?), prison reform. But like so many socialists, he has no idea where to get the money to pay for this Marxist utopia. But that’s okay; all politicians promise pie in the sky but deliver olive loaf in the gutter. The disaster of Mamdani is not inexperience and economic naivete. His worthlessness boils down to one issue: virulent hatred of Israel. When you elect someone whose rallying cry is “globalize the Intifada,” who calls Israel’s revenge against Hamas “genocide,” and who refused to co-sponsor Holocaust Remembrance Day, you’re putting power in the hands of a dangerous, evil radical.

The very fact that Mamdani was backed by AOC and by Bernie Sanders, a self-hating Communist kike if there ever was one, tells you everything you need to know—except that this guy isn’t even Arab! Mamdani is Ugandan—the country that gave us Idi Amin, child soldiers, and anti-gay legislation that makes Yemen look like Rainbow Station on Christopher Street.

So, New Yorkers, when November rolls around, you have a choice. You can reelect Mayor Adams—who may not be Giuliani but he certainly moved the city past the DeBlasio debacle. You can go Republican with Curtis Sliwa, who’s run so many times, he should campaign in jogging shorts. (Actually, I think he does.) And, by the way, the platform of pro-police, anti-crime, anti-illegals, conservative Sliwa also includes pilot testing universal basic income. Put that in your progressive pipe and smoke it!

Oh, and there’s also an independent candidate: Jim Walden, a high-powered attorney who has as much chance of winning as I have of growing my foreskin back. Then again, the impossible and unthinkable have happened so many times the past couple years, I keep Ripley’s Believe it or Not on speed dial.

What I do believe is that Big Apple Democrats now have their own Trump – a scary wildcard they chose mainly to signal their exasperation with the status quo. Or at least I hope that was the motivation. The other option is that pro-Muslim anti-Semitism has become so ingrained in the left—even the Jewish left—that they’d vote for Bin Laden if he used the right pronouns.

Me? I fear for New York and America, not because Zohran Mamdani will build concentration camps or start pogroms, or close all the delis. I dread a culture that turns a blind eye to hateful ideology and a deaf ear to common sense. Too often, socialist policies meant to provide a safety net instead ignite lawlessness. But look on the bright side: there’s always sharia law.
